Fuck Monday.
There, I said it. I know we're supposed to wake up on Monday mornings feeling refreshed, motivated, excited about the opportunities ahead of us, and ready to conquer the world, but sometimes Monday just sucks. Your alarm goes off, you're tired, the weekend feels like it lasted about fifteen minutes, and the last thing you want to do is open your laptop and see what kind of nonsense has been waiting for you since Friday afternoon. I get it. I've been there plenty of times, and I think it's perfectly acceptable to wake up on a Monday morning and say, "Fuck Monday."
Somewhere along the way, we developed this ridiculous idea that successful people are supposed to love every minute of what they do. We're supposed to jump out of bed, attack the day, embrace the grind, and approach every Monday like it's some incredible gift we've been given. Give me a break. You can love your job, love your company, love the people you work with, and still want absolutely nothing to do with Monday morning. You can be incredibly ambitious, have big goals, and be excited about your career while simultaneously wishing you had another twelve hours to sit on your couch and do absolutely nothing.
But here's where I think Monday gets interesting. As much as I might occasionally hate the idea of Monday, I've also learned that how you approach the first day of the week has an enormous impact on how the rest of your week plays out. When Monday goes well, there's something about the momentum it creates that makes Tuesday feel easier, Wednesday more productive, and Thursday like you're actually getting somewhere. You start the week feeling like you're ahead instead of spending the next four days trying to catch up. There's a pretty big difference between waking up on Tuesday already feeling accomplished and waking up realizing you wasted the entire day before.
Think about how many Mondays you've spent simply trying to survive. You sit through meetings, respond to emails, catch up on everything you missed, organize your calendar, and convince yourself that tomorrow is when you're really going to get after it. Before you know it, it's five o'clock, you've been busy all day, and you haven't actually accomplished anything that matters. You were working, no question about that, but did you move anything forward? Did you make progress on something important? Did you do anything that's going to make the rest of your week easier? Or did you just spend eight hours getting ready to start working?

I've started thinking about Monday as an opportunity to put a win on the board as quickly as possible. It doesn't have to be some massive accomplishment or a life-changing breakthrough. Maybe it's having the difficult conversation you've been putting off, getting a project across the finish line, making progress on something that's been sitting on your to-do list, or knocking out the one thing you know is going to make the biggest difference this week. Whatever it is, find something meaningful and get it done. Give yourself a reason to close your laptop on Monday evening and feel like you actually accomplished something. One meaningful win can completely change how you feel about the four days that follow.
There's also something to be said about not letting your mood dictate your effort. Just because you wake up feeling like Monday can kiss your ass doesn't mean you have to give Monday a terrible performance. You don't have to be excited to be productive. You don't have to be motivated to make progress. You don't even have to be in a particularly good mood to do something that matters. Sometimes you just have to show up, do the work, and let the feeling of accomplishment catch up with you later. I've had plenty of days where I didn't feel like doing much of anything, but once I got moving and started making progress, my attitude changed right along with it.
I also think we put way too much pressure on ourselves to have the perfect week. We create these enormous lists of things we're going to accomplish, schedule every minute of our calendars, and convince ourselves that this is finally going to be the week where everything comes together. Then Monday happens, something goes sideways, a meeting runs long, a problem shows up that nobody saw coming, and suddenly we're frustrated that the week isn't going according to plan. Who cares? Your week doesn't have to be perfect to be productive. Monday doesn't have to be amazing to be a win. Sometimes getting one important thing done in the middle of all the chaos is more than enough.
So this morning, as your alarm goes off and you find yourself wishing it was still Sunday, go ahead and say it. Fuck Monday. Complain about it, drink another cup of coffee, stare at your calendar in disgust, and give yourself a few minutes to wish you were somewhere else. Then get to work. Find one thing that matters, something that's going to move your career, your team, your business, or your life forward, and make it happen. You don't have to love Monday, and you certainly don't have to pretend you're excited about it. But if you can figure out how to win Monday, there's a pretty good chance you're going to like the way the rest of your week turns out.
